    Strokes Per Length (SPL) is relative to the length of the pool you swim in. In open-water there are no walls and therefore Stroke Length (SL) is the unit to use, and what most GPS swim watches will calculate for you. Stroke Length = how far does your body travel forward from each stroke of the arm. This is also known as Distance Per Stroke (DPS).

    To convert SPL to SL, use this equation:

    SL = DS / SPL

    DS = the length of your pool – the distance of your glide to your first stroke.

    [Distance Per Stroke or DPS = SL]

    To convert SL to SPL, use this equation:

    SPL = DS / SL
