    Introduction to Recovery and Entry

    During the recovery the hand exits pinky finger first, swinging with a straight arm, to enter pinky first at a wide arc. While practicing the recovery in drill form, the arm will temporarily be above the water creating a push down on the torso. Be prepared to dip down in the water a little and use an exhale until the body returns to a neutral balanced position. See the Head Submersion Drill to rehearse this exhale reflex. 

    The body maintains the 45 degree rotation as the arm arcs above the water. There is a moment where the arm can not travel any further comfortably without the torso rotating. This is the point where the torso drops to allow the arm entry into the now Streamline position. 

    For the Half Recovery Arm Drills bringing the arm up about 45 degrees, then lower back to starting point. Repeat this several times while holding Streamline in order to train the overlapped timing of the arm switch.

    • Review Streamline Cues…
    • Star with elbow to rib cage, straight arm
    • Shoulder stays up, supporting the recovery swing
    • Pinky leads the hand (palm facing sideways)
    • Arm arcs from exit by hip directly toward wide entry point (don’t veer inward over center line of body)
    • Keep arm straight, avoid bending the elbow
    • As pinky is ready to enter, shoulder drops (torso turns) to take it down
