    BSP Core Principles

    The sequence of our skill development is guided by these principles of physics and physiology:

    1. Balance (and Stability)
    2. Streamline
    3. Synchronized Whole-Body Propulsion

    In TI this is called the BSP Pyramid.


    We both build the skills and diagnose/correct problems in this order of priority. Their position and size symbolize their relative importance in your swimming ease and speed.

    If you establish balance first, it becomes much easier to create a streamline body upon it. If you improve streamline, it requires less propulsive effort to travel forward faster. This translates into easier, faster, farther, and more enjoyable swimming.

    BSP Principle Skills

    We break the three principles down into skill sets:

    1. Fore-aft Balance (Superman Glide)
    2. Rotational Balance (Superman + Recovery)
    3. Passive Streamline (Skate Position)
    4. Active Streamline (Spear Skate/Switch, Swing Skate/Switch)
    5. Core Rotation (in Switch drills)
    6. Arm Extension (in Switch drills)
    7. Toe Flick (2 Beat Kick drills)
    8. The Catch

    Physics and physiology urge the skills to be developed in this order. As we move from balance skills to propulsion skills, we are working from the spine outward to the ends of the appendages; we are starting with gross motor skills and working toward fine motor skills.
