Support Structure Suggestions
Support Structures or Physical Assistance can help you feel some control and stability while working on an otherwise uncomfortable activity. Support allows you to focus on the activity with more confidence in safety than would have been without an aid. As you gain more confidence and calm with the activity, you can wean off the support until you are exploring the activity freely.
Structures you might find in a pool that we suggest:
Stationary Support Structures
- Stairs
- Ladder
- Hand Rail
- Lane Line
- Wall
Mobile Support Structures
- Person
- Pool Noodle
- Ball
- Life jacket
How to Use
The hands should hold the Support Structure below the surface of the water (approximately 6 inches – 1 foot below the surface).
Start with hands on support, each time lessen the amount of pressure applied on the support structure
Work your way towards just the finger tips on the structure. When this feels comfortable, try pushing off with the fingers to then allow the body to float a few inches away from the support.
Finally try without any support facing the shallow end
If you’re up for the challenge, try starting from the shallow end and change your directional orientation and work your way towards facing towards the deep end.
